Hashtag fake news will talk about the tightness of the race between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. There will be foolish chatter on how Mike Bloomberg and Elizabeth Warren still have much appeal. Yet, as of this writing (7:13 PM PST), Biden looks like the clear winner tonight.
However, the truth is a deeper. Many Dem primary voters want somebody other than Biden or Sanders. On average it comes to more than 37 of 100 who want someone other than Biden or Sanders. By state, that looks like this:
- 45 of 100 in Arkansas
- 43 of 100 in Colorado
- 42 of 100 in Massachusetts
- 37 of 100 in Oklahoma
- 35 of 100 in North Carolina
- 33 of 100 in Tennessee
- 32 of 100 in Maine
- 32 of 100 in Minnesota
Only in the states of Vermont (52 of 100 for Sanders), Alabama (61 of 100 for Biden) and Virginia (53 of 100 for Biden) are there clear preferences for a candidate.
Even the South Carolina primary from last Saturday showed that nearly 46 of 100 Dem primary voters want someone other than Biden or Sanders.
Certainly, the numbers can change as primaries in Utah and California have yet to report. Yet, the general trend is clear. There is no clear preference for Biden or Sanders, two candidates who are polar opposite. Biden is an aged moderate Democrat who shows clear signs of advancing, significant cognitive decline at 77. His chief appeal is that he worked for Obama and thus should be seen as the white Obama.
Sanders is an ardent socialist even at 78 who has suffered already one heart attack and who truly does not understand how economies work. His appeals revolve around promising free stuff—free major medical, free higher education, free housing—to everyone who is not rich by his standards as well as promising to destroy the oil and natural gas industries as well as affordable car manufacturing to people likely who ride buses and subways.
