Yesterday, oilprice.com reported about yet another politicians' driven scheme to tax bogeyman firms for the production of their products, in this case, steel (see: How Would A Carbon Tax Impact The Steel Industry?).
There is talk always about imposing carbon taxes on necessary goods, you know, steel to make girders to make buildings, or to make car bodies, or oil and natural gas, to fuel cars, heat homes, cook food.
Have you noticed ever that "sin" taxes always get called for their imposition by Hollywood and New York news propagandists upon things, which such propagandists turn into sins through their visual imagery and story telling? Where carbon taxes ought to be imposed are upon the production of superfluous goods, you know, like entertainment. No one needs paid entertainment to survive. Everyone needs sufficient food, warm or cool houses, clothing and the like. People need transportation as well.
If there is to be righteous carbon taxation, such taxation should fall upon all things superfluous, such as television broadcasting and television receiving, Internet streaming, paid admission sports, whether professional or at the university level, paid admission to movies as well as Broadway plays, luxury yachts, luxury cars, recreational vehicles, video game consoles, video games and so on.
Of course, many claim, rightly, that if you tax something, you get less of it. Well good then. If carbon truly is an evil and truly there is man-made global warming, then all things not needed to sustain life ought to be taxed.
