Many Americans do not know what conservatism means. Authentic conservatism means striving to repeal of the laws and regulation of Progressivism.
Institutional progressivism began with FDR's "Alphabet Soup" of agencies, continued with Johnson's Great Society (Civil Rights Act, Hart-Celler Immigration Act), grew with Nixon (EPA, closed gold window — August 15, 1971), grew further with excessive illegal immigration under GHW Bush, Clinton (NAFTA), GW Bush and Obama. Progressivism USA continues to grow with Obama (Obamacare).
The Republican Party have been failures as conservatives. They have moved left and have embraced everything the progressives have won — a giant-sized welfare government as well as SCUSA rulings on abortion, Obamacare, gay marriage.
Republican Party politicians have been thoroughgoing failures in the 20th and 21st centuries. The only good GOPher presidents since 1900 have been Calvin Coolidge and Reagan. The GOPher controlled congresses since Roe v Wade have done nothing to introduce amendments to ban abortion.
Many make inapt comparisons between Trump and others. Trump is more like Calvin Coolidge than anyone. While Coolidge was a man of few words, Trump is a colorful, loud speaker.
Silent Calvin Coolidge was among the best presidents (30th) of the USA.
Coolidge who quipped “The chief business of the American people is business,” was a pro-American business president who favored lean, efficient government and who rooted out corruption. Coolidge set high tariffs on imported goods to protect American industry and delivered to Americans prosperity and boom times during the fabled Roaring Twenties.
Smartly, Coolidge rejected U.S. membership in the League of Nations. Coolidge fixed the USA and in doing so had Americans believing in Congress and the executive.
Trump is the first decent GOPher candidate since Reagan. However, Trump is more like a loud Cal.
